The Calgary Learns Association (Calgary Learns) exists to enable barriered adult learners to access foundation learning opportunities. Calgary Learns supported non-profit organizations to provide part-time, non credit educational programs, to adult Calgarians, especially to those participation is restricted due to financial reasons. To that end, Calgary learns funded programs for barriered learners in the areas of English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Literacy, Employment Enhancement and programs that address Community Issues (such as parenting, integration or wellness programs). The granting model includes involving community members in consultaitons to discuss emerging needs, setting priorities, reviewing proposals, and finally making recommendations to our Board of Directors for funding. Calgary Learns has 50 members, (14 individuals and 36 agencies) that are provided with networking opportunities, information on professional development, resources for program development and workshops on improving funding proposals, and program evaluation. Finally, Calgary Learns serves as an information source to individuals in the community who are seeking an opportunity in lifelong learning.
